What is this Hackathon about? /

Smart City hackathon is a unique event in Hubballi-Dharwad from 3pm IST on Nov. 14 to 3pm IST on Nov. 15, 2015. If you are willing to work continuously for 24 hours to help create the city of the future, please join us! You can participate on-site, or virtually over the Internet from anywhere in the world.

The hackathon is backed by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) which is one of the first municipal corporations in India to make available its data and software interfaces (APIs) like maps of ward boundaries and landmarks, complaint information, details of civic works, spending bills, locations of hoardings, etc. for the development of innovative applications. Such applications will usher in more efficiency, transparency and citizen friendliness in governance. HDMC is awarding total prize money of Rs. 1,00,000 to the best teams at the event.

FAQs /

Hubballi-Dharwad is one of the 98 smart cities short-listed for Government of India's flagship smart cities program. H-D is a leading contender for the second phase of the Smart Cities program, and has the highest number of ideas suggested on its site. Its now time to turn those ideas into reality!

H-D is located in North Karnataka and is well connected by air, road and train. You can book your tickets on IRCTC, Redbus or Make My Trip. The hackathon will be held at Sandbox Startups, which is an incubator run by the Deshpande Foundation, an internationally renowned hub of social entrepreneurship. Please see the map below for directions to the venue.

If you cannot participate in person, consider participating over the Internet. Virtual participants will have access to the same orientation, datasets and mentors as on-site participants. The only difference is that they will need to upload a recorded presentation of up to 5 minutes at the end of the hackathon.

No. In discussion with HDMC, the organizers have already identified a series of projects that you can work on. If you are not in a team, we will pair you up with others who are looking for team mates. You can also browse the H-D page to look for ideas.

Of course, you are welcome to work on an idea of your own, whether or not it uses the datasets we provide, as long as it are connected to the Smart Cities theme.

Yes, can you register with as many members as you have, including individually. We will match you up with others who are looking for teams. Please provide your skills profile in the registration form, so we can find appropriate match-ups.
Not necessarily. Depending on space availability, we may have to limit on-site participation to selected teams. However, you are welcome to participate virtually from anywhere in the world. You will have access to the same resources and mentors that on-site teams have. The opening and closing events will be webcast and video links will be maintained throughout the event.
Upon request, on-site participants who complete the 24 hour stint will receive a certificate of thanks and participation from HDMC and the organizers. Women participants who cannot stay all night can leave for the night, work from home, and still be eligible for the certificate.

A hackathon is an event where teams work continuously for 24 hours with little or no sleep to achieve focused goals. Even if you have no coding experience, you can participate if you are a designer, domain expert, entrepreneur, etc. And don't worry about the 24 hour run -- its a lot of fun working with other energetic people like you. You can take breaks in between, and catch up with sleep after the event! Once they have experienced a hackathon, a lot of people get addicted, and become habitual hackathoners 🙂
At 3pm on Sunday November 15th, all teams will present their projects to a distinguished panel of judges including technology experts and members of the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation. They are also encouraged to put up a demo website or video of their application (Virtual participants are required to do so). The judges panel will declare the top prize winners of the hackathon based on the following criteria: (1) Applicability to the smart city theme (2) Innovativeness of the project (3) Quality and extent of implementation (4) Immediate feasibility of the project (5) The team's presentation. All projects will be archived on the hack4hd website. Participants are encouraged to continue developing their ideas if they wish and can work with HDMC to deploy their ideas widely. They can also continue working on their ideas and participate in the Global Entrepreneurship Week at Sandbox Startups from Nov. 16-22, where they have the chance to win another Rs. 1,00,000 in prizes.
